Football: United plan Munich tribute

Manchester United are planning a tribute match next year to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the Munich air disaster. United hope to line up a leading European side to provide the opposition for the match early in the new year at Old Trafford.

"It's just a question of sorting out the best date. " United director Maurice Watkins said. Proceeds will go to survivors and the families of those who died.

Twenty-three people, including eight of the Busby Babes, perished in the crash at Munich airport on 6 February 1958.

Alan Curbishley, the manager of Charlton Athletic, has emerged as the favourite to succeed Ray Harford in charge at West Bromwich Albion.
