John Burridge, the veteran goalkeeper, has joined Bolton until the end of the season to replace Keith Branagan, who has a knee injury. Burridge, 44, who has been playing for Queen of the South, still works for Newcastle as a coach and will only be called on in emergencies.

John Bird resigned yesterday as manager of GM-Vauxhall Conference club Halifax after a bad run of recent results. George Mulhall, the assistant manager, takes charge on a caretaker basis.
