Errors hand Glasgow win

Glasgow at least had the consolation of some Pool B points to show for 80 minutes of lacklustre European Cup action at Ravenhill, in Belfast, last night where the crowd waited in vain for a glimpse of panache or flair.

On a night of poor handling, it was Glasgow who pounced on mistakes to take two points in a contest between the two minnows of a pool that also includes Swansea and Wasps.

Ulster led 6-3 after an early flurry of penalties, but then threw away their chance. When they looked likely to score from a pushover try the ball popped out of the side of the scrum and Glasgow counter-attacked. James Craig, their left-winger, won possession and had an easy sprint to the line with Tommy Hayes converting to give Glasgow the lead for the first time.

Then a minute from half-time Stuart Laing tried a short drop-out but Glasgow took possession and flanker Fergie Wallace sprinted through the Ulster defence to give his side a 15-6 interval lead. Although Ulster's Laing then landed a fine drop goal they found no way back.
