The South African Test batsman hit 134 as Derbyshire savaged a weakened Sussex attack - Paul Jarvis tore a calf muscle in his third over - scoring 603 for 6 declared, Kim Barnett (164) and Chris Adams (111) also profiting.
At Canterbury, David Capel (167) and Richard Montgomerie (192) both hit career-best scores as they shared a sixth-wicket stand of 322 as Northamptonshire reached 561 for 8 declared against Kent, who lost the England paceman Martin McCauge with a side strain.
Hampshire's James Bovill became the first bowler to take more than 10 wickets in a first-class match against Durham, taking six second-innings wickets for 29 for match figures of 12 for 68 at Stockton.
