Nottinghamshire 251 Sussex 277 & 70-2: Collymore shines on day for bowlers

The last time Sussex came here it was to clinch the Championship in 2006 on the back of some extraordinary bowling by Mushtaq Ahmed.

This week's visit is less likely to linger in the memory, but it could be significant as the south coast team aim for a third title in four years. Sussex, yet to win this season, were made to work to push ahead yesterday as the home bowlers produced a performance of disciplined aggression after their batsmen had fallen a little short.

Not that Sussex bowled badly. Corey Collymore's four wickets were deserved for the quality of his swing bowling, even though Mark Wagh and Adam Voges donated theirs with loose strokes. Robin Martin-Jenkins regularly beat the bat and Luke Wright produced a lively spell that saw off Chris Read and would have accounted for Graeme Swann on 12 had Adams not dropped a routine chance at second slip.

Nottinghamshire relied on scraping together runs where they could to finish 26 behind Sussex's 277.

Carl Hopkinson was dropped on nought and Michael Yardy on five as Sussex batted again but Charlie Shreck trapped Chris Nash in front and Darren Pattinson ripped out Hopkinson's off stump as the home side fought back.
