England vs South Africa player ratings: Ben Stokes impresses as Faf du Plessis falls short
How the players rated in England's 104-run victory
Ben Stokes inspired England to a 104-run win against South Africa as they began their World Cup campaign in style.
The all-rounder hit the highest score (89), took two wickets and caught the eye with a sublime catch.
Jason Roy, Joe Root, Eoin Morgan and Stokes hit half-centuries as England set South Africa 311 in their innings.
Jonny Bairstow was out without scoring after edging Imran Tahir’s first-over delivery to Quinton de Kock, requiring Test captain Root to come in and restore order as he and Roy quickly made half-centuries to settle some early nerves.
Morgan and Stokes were in next, with the later making 89 as England fell slightly below their par score.
With South Africa in the field, Jofra Archer made the breakthrough, Aiden Markram, then got Faf du Plessis out.
Quinton de Kock and Rassie van der Dussen made 50, but a flurry of wickets from Archer, Liam Plunkett and Adil Rashid swung the momentum back towards England before Stokes caught a sublime catch and took the final two wickets.
