Also-rans: Michael Schumacher's team-mates

Nelson Piquet: Triple world champion. Beaten by Schumacher in the German's first race for Benetton in 1991. Retired from Grand Prix racing shortly afterwards.

Martin Brundle: Raced well against Ayrton Senna in Formula Three, but consistently outqualified by Schumacher in Formula One in 1992. Replaces Irvine at Jordan next year.

Riccardo Patrese: Most experienced Grand Prix driver of all time. Could not match Schumacher's pace in 1993, and retired at the end of the season.

JJ Lehto: Protege of former world champion Keke Rosberg. Injured neck in early 1994 and never challenged Schumacher. Dropped in mid-season.

Jos Verstappen: Former Formula Three star who was out of his depth in a top Grand Prix team. Fiery pit-lane incident at Hockenheim did not help his confidence. Farmed out to now-defunct Simtek team.

Johnny Herbert: Formerly chirpy Brit rendered chippy by Schumacher's speed. Won races but complained the team had let him down.
