Sitting at the head of a rolling valley with views down to the sea is St Johns, a run-down, single-storey white cottage in an acre of land. Originally built as a bottling plant for the nearby mineral water source, it is currently a house with a large sitting room, dining room, kitchen, three bedrooms and bathroom, with the potential to develop into the roof space. The only snag is that you have to bid for it. St Johns is to be sold at auction in mid-October by Stags in Barnstaple (01271 22833) with a guide price of pounds 50,000.
