People queueing to vote in Durban as the KwaZulu-Natal area held local elections yesterday. Amid heavy security, South Africa's most turbulent region voted without incident. While the poll is for local officials only, results will be a significant barometer of the strength of the nation's two leading black parties - Nelson Mandela's African National Congress and the Zulu-based Inkatha Freedom Party of Mangosuthu Buthelezi. The ANC and Inkatha have fought for control of the Zulu heartland for 12 years. More than 14,000 people have died in the conflicts.
