Five killed by Iraq car bomb blast

Ap

Five people, including two soldiers, have been killed in a car bomb blast near a security checkpoint south of Baghdad, Iraqi officials said today.

Police officials said the attack targeted a checkpoint in the town of Mahmoudiya. The explosion killed two soldiers and three civilian bystanders, and injured 15 other people.

Mahmoudiya is about 20 miles (30km) south of the capital.

Medics in a nearby hospital confirmed the casualties.

Violence has fallen since the peak of insurgency in Iraq several years ago, but lethal attacks still occur frequently.
