Kabul ceasefire

KABUL (Reuter) - Afghanistan's mujahedin government yesterday announced a ceasefire with the rebel Hizbe Islami party and was to set up a buffer force around Kabul, devastated by three weeks of relentless rocket and artillery exchanges. Sporadic rocket salvos stopped about half an hour before the ceasefire was due to take effect.

Unilateral ceasefires announced by both sides for Friday were shattered when a Hizb rocket destroyed a plane sent to airlift Russian diplomats from Kabul. The last 50 Russian diplomats in the city and 10 commandos flew out aboard an Afghan army plane yesterday.
