India frees 'bandit queen'

India's Supreme Court ordered the release of a legendary 'bandit queen', jailed without trial since 1983 on charges of murder, kidnapping and robbery, the Press Trust of India (PTI) said, Reuter reports from New Delhi

The court directed that Phoolan Devi, who became a folk heroine, be freed on parole after the newly elected government of Uttar Pradesh state said that it would withdraw all 44 charges against her, on which she has never stood trial.
