The South African Communist Party appointed Charles Nqakula, a former journalist, to succeed Chris Hani as secretary- general, Reuter reports from Johannesburg. Mr Nqakula worked for the Daily Dispatch in East London in the early 1980s and joined the United Democratic Front, an anti-apartheid coalition, before the Communist Party was unbanned in 1990.
