Athens - Greek Prime Minister Andreas Papandreou's handpicked candidate for mayor of Athens dealt the Socialist government a serious blow when he conceded defeat in yesterday's elections.

With 2 per cent of the votes counted, the former European affairs minister, Theodoros Pangalos, won 41.92 per cent, trailing badly behind his conservative opponent, a former diplomat, Dimitris Avramopoulos. The loss damaged Mr Pangalos's chances of succeeding Mr Papandreou at the party's helm. Reuter
