Russia sets date for coup trial

Moscow (AP) - Twelve men accused of mounting the Soviet coup in 1991 will stand trial on 14 April, a court official announced yesterday, capping more than a year of investigation, manoeuvring and bitter recriminations.

The trial is likely to shed more light on the coup, including allegations that Mikhail Gorbachev, then president, knew about the plans beforehand. Six of the 12 alleged coup plotters have already been released pending trial and two more are in hospital. The other four were freed yesterday.
