Moldovan tennis chief dies in car explosion

Reuters

The head of Moldova's tennis federation died yesterday after a parked car blew up as he walked past.

Igor Turcan, 38, suffered wounds to his head, stomach and legs when the Lada with Russian plates exploded outside the federation's offices in the capital, Chisinau.

His deputy described the incident as an assassination, but the interior ministry said the blast may have been caused by a gas cylinder. Mr Turcan headed the campaign for an independent candidate in last weekend's mayoral election.
