Paris - Michel Garretta, the main defendant in France's HIV-contaminated blood trial, flew home yesterday from the United States to begin a four-year jail sentence, writes Julian Nundy.

Garretta, who went to Boston at the end of the trial of four senior doctors in August and did not attend last Friday's verdict and sentencing, said France now had a 'witch to burn'. He was found guilty of fraud for distributing blood products known to be tainted with the HIV virus to haemophiliacs in 1985 when he was head of the Paris National Blood Transfusion Centre.
