French rail strike

Paris (Reuter) - France's rail network faced 48 hours of protest stoppages after a train driver, Lionel Veniant, received a suspended jail sentence for manslaughter in connection with an accident that killed one person and injured 77 four years ago. Commuter traffic in eastern Paris was cut by half by mid-afternoon and the disruption was expected to spread. The unions blame the state railway company, SNCF, for accidents because of inadequate safety measures.
