Balladur excused

AFrench court trying the Nazi collaborator Paul Touvier for crimes against humanity granted a request from the Prime Minister, Edouard Balladur, not to testify, saying his evidence was not essential, Reuter reports from Versailles. Touvier's lawyer had called for Mr Balladur to appear in court because he was the chief aide to the late president Georges Pompidou, who pardoned Touvier in 1971.
