Residents across New Zealand, including Christchurch were taking delight in the unusual sight of snowflakes falling. Despite disruption to services, people are taking to the streets with cameras and cheers as the country rarely sees snow – the few inches that fell on Sunday and yesterday were the most in the capital, Wellington, in at least 30 years.

Postal deliveries in many centres was cancelled, as were some flights. Some roads were closed and recreational facilities such as libraries and swimming pools were shut in many centres.

Forecasters are predicting the cold snap will continue until tomorrow. AP
