Sewage makes Goa's tourist beaches unsafe

Beaches in the Indian state of Goa are unfit for swimming and fishing because of high levels of sewage contamination, scientists say.

The popular beach destination, which attracts almost 2.6 million tourists a year, was found to have much higher levels of bacteria in coastal and river waters than is safe. A senior scientist, N Ramaiah, said entering the water was risky: "If you have a cut on your skin or a wound, it could be serious."
