A British actor, who played a terrorist in a drama about the London bombings of 7 July on the television channel Five, described last night how he had nearly been killed by terrorists in Mumbai.

Joey Jeetun, 31, from London, was at Leopold's cafe, the popular backpackers' haunt behind the Taj Mahal Hotel, when gunmen opened fire. Sitting at the back of the room, he was sprayed with the blood of the people hit by gunfire.

"Some guy just literally shoved me to the floor and told me to stay down," he told Sky News. "All I heard was a sound like a lightbulb exploding. Then I could hear people shouting and screaming. Straight after there was blood everywhere. Then I could see my friend had been shot in the leg. Everyone else got shot in the head. Everyone around me was shot."

Mr Jeetun played the role of Shahzad Tanweer, one of the four July bombers, in 7/7: Attack On London, broadcast in 2005.
