Almost four in five Americans believe an independent investigator should be appointed to look into Donald Trump’s alleged links with Russia, a new poll has found.

A massive 78 per cent of people want a special prosecutor to handle the investigation that is currently being led by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), whose director James Comey was fired by the US president last week.

In contrast, only 15 per cent want Congress to lead the probe.

The NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll was conducted immediately after the US leader sacked Mr Comey, who had until last week been leading the investigation into the possible collusion between Mr Trump's campaign and Russia’s alleged efforts to influence the presidential election.

It subsequently emerged that at a private dinner Mr Trump had reportedly asked for his FBI director’s loyalty. Mr Comey is said to have declined.

The survey found Americans were unhappy with Mr Trump’s decision. Just 20 per cent said they approved of the sacking, while 38 per cent disapproved. The remaining 32 per cent said they did not know.

Of those who expressed an opinion, 58 per cent of Republicans and 66 per cent of Democrats are unhappy with the move.

Almost one in three (30 per cent) voters said Mr Trump’s firing of Mr Comey had made them less favourable to the US President.

Overall, Mr Trump’s approval rating stands at 39 per cent – much lower than that of other recent US presidents at this point in their term.

Even supporters of his own Republican Party, disapprove of his performance, compared to 66 per cent of Democrats and 36 per cent of independents.

Mr Trump’s decision to sack Mr Comey was met with widespread condemnation, with many accusing the Republican of attempting to hinder the FBI’s investigation into his alleged links with Russia.

Donald Trump: FBI was in "virtual turmoil"

Almost half (46 per cent) of Americans agree with that claim while only 38 per cent believe the decision was related to Mr Comey’s competence in handling an investigation into Hillary Clinton’s use of a private email server.

Mr Trump has defended his decision, albeit by giving different justifications for the move.

The White House initially claimed the President had simply been following the advice of the Deputy Attorney General, Rod Rosenstein, who had recommended the sacking.

However, Mr Trump later told NBC News he would have made the decision regardless of the advice he received.

“Regardless of recommendation, I was going to fire Comey," he said. "The FBI has been in turmoil. You know that, I know that, everyone knows that.”
