Republican says women who wore white suffragette suits to Trump's speech were 'poorly dressed'

'There is a disease associated with the notion that a bunch of women would wear bad-looking white pantsuits in solidarity with Hillary Clinton to celebrate her loss,' says Kevin Cramer, who is planning a Senate run

A Republican politician has mocked opposition Democrat women for wearing white during Donald Trump's address to Congress.

Congressman Kevin Cramer said the group had worn "bad-looking white pantsuits" in solidarity with defeated Presidential candidate Hillary Clinton.

But House minority leader Nancy Pelosi had said before the speech the move was a salute to suffragettes and "in support of women's rights—in spite of a @POTUS who doesn't".

According to Politico, Mr Cramer said during a radio programme: "It is a syndrome. There is no question, there is a disease associated with the notion that a bunch of women would wear bad-looking white pantsuits in solidarity with Hillary Clinton to celebrate her loss. You cannot get that weird."

Mr Cramer, of North Dakota, is reportedly planning to run for the Senate.

Ms Pelosi responded by tweeting: ".@RepKevinCramer, thank you for illustrating why we so badly need to honor #WomensHistoryMonth."

Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz told CNN: "He obviously misses the point.

"When we are sitting right in front of [Trump] with a sea of white attire, that we are not going to allow him to roll back women's progress in this country, it's actually patriotic and shows that we care about the issues that are important to women and won't let them roll back our progress."

Mr Cramer defended his comments and said the Democrats "were really there to be rude to Donald Trump".
