He is dressed in a jumpsuit, wears a TV on his head and, in the little community of Glen Allen, Virginia, has caused equal parts amusement, equal parts consternation.

An apparent prankster, working in the dead of night, has left more than 60 television sets on the front porches and gardens of residents living in the Henrico County neighbourhood.

CCTV footage shows the man dropping off the boxes – while donned in his distinctive outfit – in the early hours of Sunday morning.

But if waking up to a free TV sounds like the stuff of dreams, there is a catch: these are old school rear-projection sets that estimates suggest are more than 15 years old.

“It was a guy dressed in a jumpsuit with a TV for a head,” resident Adam Garner told the state’s WWBT news chanel after viewing his door-cam footage. “It’s the weirdest thing. He squats down, puts the TV there and walks off.

“My first reaction was, ‘Did we order this?’ Not in an Amazon box, it was just kind of strange.”

A neighbour said he assumed his son had brought home the device after a night out.

“But apparently not,” Michael Kroll noted, adding that whoever the prankster was “had way too much time on their hands.”

He said something similar had happened in an adjacent neighbourhood this time last year and suggested it may be youngsters fooling around during the summer.

“I think it’s just a prank,” he said. “Some college students who are just bored.”

Police, who spent much of Sunday morning collecting the units, were rather less amused, however.

Lieutenant Matt Pecka of Henrico Police, warned that if the culprits were caught they could be facing charges of littering on private property or illegal dumping.
