Police arrested more than 100 demonstrators after clashes in Oakland, California, on Thursday that activists and city officials blamed on agitators who provoked unrest following a day of mostly peaceful rallies against inequality.

Bus-loads of police in riot gear advanced on demonstrators after midnight, firing tear gas. Hours earlier, thousands of protesters had forced the busy Port of Oakland to shut down.
