Donald Trump thanks James Comey at intelligence meeting

President Donald Trump has singled out the FBi director who reopened an investigation into Hillary Clinton days before the presidential election for a public thank you.

Mr Trump said James Comey had "become more famous than me."

He called Mr Comey over to where he was standing for a handshake and a hug.

Days before the 8 November election, Mr Comey sent a letter to the US congress announcing he was reopening an investigation into whether Ms Clinton misheld classified information when she used a private email server while secretary of state.

He later made another announcement saying the investigation had not changed its view and did not intend to bring charges.

Days after her defeat, Ms Clinton blamed Mr Comey for blunting her campaign's momentum in the election.

Some figures suggest Mr Comey's announcement may have played a key role in Ms Clinton's election loss.

Mr Trump was speaking in the Blue Room of the White House to law enforcement officers and other agency heads who'd helped with Friday's festivities.

He thanked the officials for their work on the inauguration, and said the day was "such a success and such a safety success."

The Justice Department has opened an investigation into allegations Mr Comey mishandled the email investigation.
