Jailed US lawyer attempts suicide in Rwanda

An American lawyer being held in Rwanda on charges of denying the 1994 genocide has tried to commit suicide in his cell, police say.

Peter Erlinder is believed to have swallowed 45 to 50 pills on Tuesday. His condition is said to be improving. Police say the attempt may lead courts to charge Mr Erlinder with attempted suicide.

Mr Erlinder, who was arrested last Friday, was part of the defence team of Victoire Ingabire, an opposition leader accused of promoting genocidal ideology. Mr Erlinder could face up to 25 years in prison.
