The Labour Party in Blackpool: Decisions of the day

Conference called for:

Parliamentary and Labour Party committees to oversee the security services and, in particular, the resignation of Harold Wilson and the work of intelligence societies in Northern Ireland at that time;

A tightening of election law to stop the issue of leaflets designed to appear as though issued by another candidate;

The BBC to be guaranteed independence from political interference and privatisation;

British overseas aid to be increased to the UN target of 0.7 per cent of GNP;

The Government to approach the EC for European Intervention Funding for Swan Hunter shipbuilders, who announced 1,425 job losses in August;

The Government to offer sanctuary and, if necessary, resettlement opportunities to refugees from the former Yugoslavia.

Conference rejected calls for:

Women-only shortlists for Parliamentary candidates in Labour-held seats;

Speeding-up of the work of the Plant Committee on electoral systems;

The first-past-the-post system to be retained for Commons elections;

A ban on expatriates voting in UK elections.
