Laura Riding, later known as Laura (Riding) Jackson (1901-1991), was born in New York City. Her books include Progress of Stories, A Trojan Ending, Lives of Wives and The Word 'Woman', all published by Carcanet. This poem appears in a recent collection A Selection of the Poems of Laura Riding (Carcanet) edited by Robert Nye. This is the last in a series of five poems which coincides with the South Bank Centre's Towards the Millennium festival which runs throughout March and April. An exhibition of poetry from the Thirties is on show at The Poetry Library, Royal Festival Hall, London, until 30 April.
