Baroness Thatcher yesterday fiercely denied she would try to undermine or embarrass John Major in her campaign for a referendum over the Maastricht treaty, which the Prime Minister has ruled out.
She intends to speak when the issue is raised in the House of Lords on Wednesday, but rejected reports that her objective was to damage Mr Major. She said: 'I never, never do that.'
