THE caricature of the drunken Scotsman is a myth - or so figures released today suggest.

Scottish households spend less each week on alcohol than the average UK family - pounds 10 rather than pounds 10.95.

The sobering statistic was disclosed in the new edition of the Scottish Abstract of Statistics, the largest single source of facts and figures on life in Scotland.

Other statistics show that Glasgow was Scotland's wettest city in 1992, and Dundee the sunniest. Crimes recorded by Scottish police forces fell 0.5 per cent in 1992 compared to the year before.
