This was the awkward moment Ed Miliband and Nick Clegg had to stand next to the man who had just destroyed their political careers - David Cameron.

The Labour and Liberal Democrat leaders attended the VE Day commemorations to mark the 70th anniversary of the end of World War II, just hours after they both announced their resignations.

The leaders were joined by First Minister of Scotland Nicola Sturgeon and SNP's leader in Westminster Angus Robertson.

Newly-elected MP Boris Johnson, Foreign Secretary Phillip Hammond and Defence Secretary Michael Fallon also joined the memorial.

Mr Miliband and Mr Clegg put on brave faces in their last official engagements as party leaders, although the out-going Deputy Prime Minister showed signs of how much he was hurting inside:

It was a torrid night for the two leaders, with Labour winning just 232 seats and the Liberal Democrats losing all but eight of their 57 seats.
