Oxford council criticised after ‘banning’ anti-Brexit bus from parking

Oxford council has been criticised after it “banned” an anti-Brexit bus from stopping in a street in the city.

The “Brexit Facts Bus”, which is a response to the infamous bus claiming £350m would be spent on the NHS after Britain leaves the EU, was crowdfunded and is currently touring the UK.

However, it has been stopped from parking in Broad Street, Oxford, which has led to some criticising the council for attacking free speech.

John Tanner, secretary of the Oxford European Association, said it was "extraordinary".

"The county council appears to be saying that anything that's political has no place on the public highway, which is news to me," Mr Tanner told the BBC.

Conservative-controlled Oxfordshire County Council said it could not "permit political advertising on the highway".

Oxford West and Abingdon’s Liberal Democrat MP, Layla Moran, said the ban "can only be seen as a politically motivated move”.

The bus will travel across the UK until 28 February.
