British Coal is to bring forward the closure of two South Wales pits employing nearly 500 miners. Workers at Betws colliery near Ammanford, Dyfed, and Taff Merthyr pit at Trelewis, Mid Glamorgan, have been told their jobs will join the next few months. It will leave Tower colliery at Hirwaun, Mid Glamorgan, as the only working pit in South Wales. In the 1920s more than 270,000 men were employed in the region.
