New level of tier restrictions introduced 

Tier 4 households banned from mixing for Christmas

Matt Hancock has announced new parts of the country will enter new tier 4 restrictions, citing the new rapidly spreading variant of coronavirus.

The Health Secretary outlined a number of areas in the east and south of England that will move into the top tier on Boxing Day and has left only one part of the country in the most lenient rules.

Here is the full list of areas that are in tier 4 and those that will move into it on Boxing Day:

East of England

Bedford, Central Bedfordshire, Luton and Milton Keynes

some local authorities in Essex (Basildon, Braintree, Brentwood, Castle Point, Chelmsford, Epping Forest, Harlow, Maldon, Rochford, Southend-on-Sea and Thurrock)

some local authorities in Hertfordshire (Broxbourne, Hertsmere, Three Rivers and Watford)

Peterborough

Suffolk (from Boxing Day)

Norfolk (from Boxing Day)

London

All 32 boroughs plus the City of London

South East

Berkshire (Bracknell Forest, Reading, Slough, West Berkshire, Windsor and Maidenhead, and Wokingham)

Buckinghamshire

Gosport, Havant and Portsmouth

Hastings and Rother

Hertfordshire

Kent and Medway
