John Lewis finds its Faith after social media appeal for five-year-old bauble breaker

A five-year-old girl has written a letter of apology to John Lewis after she broke a bauble in one of their department stores.

The company’s Cambridge branch received the letter, which was addressed to its “Christmas Department” and included two £1 coins stuck on with cellotape.

The letter, signed simply “Faith”, read: “To John Lewis Cambridge. I'm sorry I broke a Christmas bauble on Saturday. It cost two pounds. Here is the money for it. Sorry again, Faith, aged 5.”

Though the original message was anonymous, and its sender identified only by her first name and a Cambridge postage stamp, the store has now been able to track down Faith in order to thank her.

The company launched a social media campaign, asking Twitter users: “Are you Faith the Cambs xmas bauble breaker? John Lewis wants to say thank you!”

Branch manager Dominic Joyce said Faith’s parents got in touch this morning, but said that no further thanks was needed.

After the “adorable gesture”, Mr Joyce said Faith had clearly been brought up well, adding that with the store so busy last weekend no one had noticed the broken bauble.

“We didn't have much to go on - just a first name, a Cambridge postmark and what might be a self-portrait,” he said.

“We get lots of nice letters but nothing quite as special as this.”
