A 21-year-old man has been charged with the murder of a carer found dead in Hyde Park.

Egyptian national Hani Khalaf, of no fixed address, appeared at Wimbledon Magistrates' Court on Saturday accused of killing 62-year-old Jairo Medina.

Mr Medina was a professional carer from Chelsea.

He was found dead on August 12 near Speakers’ Corner in Hyde Park, one of London’s most popular parks.

A member of the public raised the alarm after spotting Mr Medina near a tree.

A post-mortem did not ascertain a cause of death.

Forensic investigators cordoned off an area the size of two football pitches to gather evidence.

Officers said they were keeping an open mind over the motive.

Khalaf spoke through an interpreter to confirm his name and date of birth.

He was remanded in custody and will appear at the Old Bailey on Tuesday.

Speakers’ Corner is a part of the park where people take part in open-air public speaking and discussion.

Anyone who witnessed anything suspicious or has information that may assist the investigation is asked to call police via 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
