Chess challenge

When the final round of the Hastings International Chess tournament is played this afternoon, Judit Polgar will need to win against Yevgeny Bareyev if she is to deny him outright victory in the event for the third year in a row. Yesterday Bareyev beat Jonathan Speelman, whose attempts to complicate the game rebounded on him. Polgar showed good technique to save an inferior position against Matthew Sadler.

Today Polgar has the white pieces but she faces a difficult task if she is to share first place by winning. Scores with one round left: Bareyev 9; Polgar 8; Speelman 7 1/2; Nunn and Sadler 6 1/2; Gurevich 6; Polugayevsky 5; Crouch 3 1/2.
