The number of job vacancies for young people fell by 78 per cent between April 1990 and April 1993, according to a report today by the Greater Manchester Low Pay Unit.
The report, which the unit believes is representative of the position nation-wide, also found that average pay fell by 6.7 per cent, and that 42 per cent of jobs for 16-year-olds paid less than pounds 1.50 an hour in 1993, compared with 28 per cent in 1990.
