JOB-SEEKERS jammed the switchboard of the Millennium Dome's operators yesterday as recruitment began of 2,000 hosts for the exhibition.

Staff are being tempted with pay for the year of up to pounds 18,500. The pounds 6 hourly rate - rising to pounds 7 for senior hosts - will be doubled on New Year's Eve when the Dome opens in Greenwich, said the New Millennium Experience Company.

About 1,000 of the new workers will be on duty for the opening - on up to pounds 200 for the shift.

Hosts' responsibilities will include greeting visitors and encouraging them to participate.

Raj Pragasam, the company's human-resources director, said the wages would be well above the going rate for similar jobs in theme parks. He added: "The jobs will also enable those working to be in the most exciting place to work during the year 2000."
