MUCH OF Britain was shivering last night as the first icy spell of 1999 descended.
The first flurries of snow were reported along the east coast. In Leeming, North Yorkshire, residents woke up yesterday morning to a 6cm (2.3ins) covering. The cold snap sent temperatures plunging as low as minus 7C (23F) in Glasgow, and 2C at Heathrow, west London.
