Olive Hirst, advertising executive, died 26 February, aged 81. In 1950 became the first woman managing director of a British advertising agency, at Sells Ltd. Also the first woman Fellow of the Institute of Practitioners in Advertising (IPA), and the first to be elected to the IPA's Council. President of the Women's Advertising Club of London 1959-60. She was the driving force behind the project which led to the publication in 1971 of 150 Careers in Advertising: with equal opportunities for men and women.

Josphat Njuguna Karanja, politician, died Nairobi 28 February, aged 63. Vice-president of Kenya from 1988 to 1989. Forced to resign after allegations that he had attempted to usurp the powers of President Daniel arap Moi.
