Gary Lineker has paid tribute to his "wonderful, beautiful" mother Margaret on Twitter after revealing she has passed away days after tweeting that she was "very poorly".

The former England footballer and Match of the Day host announced the news on Twitter, saying she will live on in his heart and mind.

“I am profoundly sad to tell you that my wonderful, beautiful mother has left us. She will live on in my heart and mind. #RIPMUM” he said.

Lineker revealed last week that he had to miss Saturday’s match of the Day because his 76-year-old mother was unwell, with Dan Walker stepping in to take his place on the show.

Messages of sympathy came in from well-wishers, including Piers Morgan, The Secret Footballer and comedian Ian Royce. Morgan offered his “deepest condolences” to Lineker and his family.

Earlier in the week Lineker said he had been overwhelmed by the well-wishers for his mother after she had been ill, saying it was “massively appreciated”.
