A NatWest spokesman last night dismissed as pure speculation reports that NatWest Bank would this week sell its merchant bank NatWest Markets to Bankers Trust, the New York-based commercial bank

The deal, if completed, would put the final nail in the coffin of British hopes for a British institution capable of competing with continental European universal banks or Wall Street investment banks.
