Tougher marking is to be introduced for learner drivers taking their theory test, the Driving Standards Agency announced yesterday.

About 85 per cent of those who have sat the test since it was introduced in July have passed. The DSA is now to make the pass mark higher, rising from 26 to 30 out of 35, starting from 1 October. Bernard Herdan, the chief executive of the DSA, said people would be "safer drivers as a result".
