THE COST of Sir William Macpherson's year-long inquiry into the police investigation of black teenager Stephen Lawrence's murder and future policing of such cases exceeded pounds 4m, the Home Office announced. More than 16 per cent was for moving informants after a blunder identified them. The Metropolitan Police paid pounds 3.17m for the part of the inquiry concerning their investigation.
