First British soldiers arrive in Croatia

BRITISH troops began arriving in Croatia yesterday to support the United Nations relief operations in Bosnia-Herzegovina. The full force will number 2,400 troops, 600 more than planned.

They will probably begin protecting UN aid convoys in mid- November, staying in Bosnia for six months, before being replaced.

No extra combat equipment is being taken despite difficulties encountered last month by a reconnaissance party. The extra forces include 200 for the multinational headquarters and 400 engineers who will stay three months.
