Leading Article: Today's science

A new, broader science degree launched yesterday by the Institute of Physics could provide the answer to complaints that young people have been turned off from studying science at university because it is so specialised and dull. The aim of this new degree in integrated sciences is to give young people the skills to tackle global problems such as climate change and energy shortages. The Institute of Physics should be congratulated for developing it. Let us hope that it excites young people more than the old single-subject degrees and helps to stem the haemorrhage of students out of the sciences.
