Thousands of university lecturers will go on strike today in a protest about changes to their pensions scheme.

Lecturers belonging to the University and College Union will stage a 24-hour strike at 47 English universities over plans which will mean both raising their pension contributions and their retirement age, and bring to an end pensions based on an employee's final salary.

The strikes will affect Oxford and Cambridge and most of the London university colleges.
